This is nothing new. Doctors have been issuing warnings against the use of cannabis during pregnancy and among teenagers.
But this time, it is the United States Surgeon General who declared cannabis completely unsafe for teens and for pregnant women. According to him, no amount of weed is safe for pregnant women and young people.
In a talk with Fox Business, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar discussed the risks that are associated with the use of cannabis by adolescents and pregnant women. According to him, one of the major consequences of cannabis use has something to do with brain development.
Azar told Stuart Varney Opens a New Window that a critical factor in the development of the brain is the cannabinoid receptor. He explained that what happens with weed is that it binds to this cannabinoid receptor and that it is where all the pleasure-seeking behaviors come from.
He further pointed out that weed can block and slow down neural and brain development in adolescents and in-utero babies. As a result, it can lead to impaired IQ, reduced attention span, increased levels of depression, and early onset of psychosis, including schizophrenia.
These results are “quite significant,” Azar added.
