A new private clinic located in Cheadle, in Greater Manchester, is now considered to be the United Kingdom’s first specialist medical cannabis center. The clinic, named The Beeches, will charge patients £600-£700 for monthly prescriptions of medical marijuana.
Patients will have to pay £200 for appointments. And doctors will make decisions to prescribe medical cannabis on a case-by-case basis. Moreover, these prescriptions will be given only when medical practitioners at the clinic see that licensed pharmaceutical products cannot help with the condition or the symptoms.
The director of The Beeches is Prof. Mike Barnes. He had helped secure the first medical cannabis license for seven-year-old epileptic patient Alfie Dingley.
Alfie used to suffer from multiple life-threatening seizures, but thanks to cannabis oil, his condition has significantly improved and he is now seizure-free. The road to obtaining legal access to medical cannabis was a long and hard one for the Dingleys, though, with their request for license initially denied. Fortunately, their campaign eventually caught the attention of the national media and had caused public uproar. Alfie’s case became one of the high-profile cases looked into by the government before officials finally decided to legalize medical cannabis and authorize prescriptions for the drug.
The government announced late last year that specialist doctors can already prescribe medical cannabis products to qualified patients starting November.
A lifeline for patients
According to Barnes, patients who are suffering from chronic pain and serious psychological and neurological conditions have been clamoring for the kind of life-changing treatment that medical cannabis promises.
Their clinic, he said, will represent a lifeline for people who found more conventional treatments ineffective. What’s more, it will bring the UK into line with other countries in terms of pain management.
Barnes said that it is their hope that over time, patients from all over the country and not just those who are in Manchester will have access to the relief they need.
The Beeches will be run by Dr. David McDowell.
