Here’s some great cannabis news for medical cannabis patients:
PharmaCann, which is a vertically integrated cannabis firm that is based in Oak Park, Illinois, has designed cannabis capsules that are quickly absorbed by the body. PharmaCann Capsules also boast a longer-lasting effect.
This new oral form pharmaceutical-grade cannabis product provides medical cannabis patients a first-of-its-kind delivery method that is beyond tinctures, inhalation products, and edibles.
According to the company, the patent-pending capsules are the first to use SEDDS or self-emulsifying drug delivery system technology for cannabis.
SEDDS technology has been widely applied in biotech, nutrition, netraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. This technology has been shown to greatly improve the absorption of everything, from immunosuppressant drugs to antivirals.
Why SEDDS technology?
PharmaCann chose to use the SEDDS technology after extensive research in order to determine the best method to address cannabis’ highly variable oral absorption rate.
The two main compounds founds in cannabis — cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — are alcohol- and fat-soluble, which means that they are almost impossible to dissolve in water. This decreases the amount of compound easily absorbed by the body.
The SEDDS techonology is designed to promote better absorption of fatty compounds present in the stomach and in the intestines, and to bypass the liver. Because of this, the “first pass effect,” wherein the liver metabolizes medication and prevents much of the compound getting into the bloodstream, is averted.
How SEDDS technology would work for PharmaCann Capsules
The goal of SEDDS technology is for cannabis in the capsules to be absorbed partially by the lymphatic system. This results in higher levels of compounds circulating in the patients’ bloodstream and providing them a more predictable and more uniform experience.
Why use PharmaCann Capsules?
When taken orally, PharmaCann Capsules provide convenient, longer-lasting, reliable, effective, and more consistent dosing and delivery of the drug.
According to Chris Diorio, PharmaCann Director of Research and Development, the product helps improve patients’ quality of life. He also shared that patients have reported that the product “lasts longer and feels stronger” compared to other oral delivery options.
Diorio added that the capsules are convenient for patients who find it difficult to use other forms of cannabis products or those who prefer the discretion of taking oral medication.
Currently, PharmaCann Capsules are only available in New York. However, they are expected to be launched in Illinois by early fall.
