The 420 cannabis holiday is tomorrow and there are various events and unique celebrations taking place around the world. The great thing about 420 is that it has evolved from being just a specific time on a specific day when stoners meet together and light a joint to being a day of camaraderie, protest, live music, dancing, good food, learning, and even shopping! In other words, “Weed Day” has evolved to something so much more as it now encompasses many other aspects of the cannabis culture and the cannabis industry.
What are the best 420 celebrations like?
1. Vancouver, B.C.
Head over to Vancouver in British Columbia, where 420 is celebrated on the beach. Smokeout Vancouver or 420 Vancouver, which has been around for over two decades, is the biggest weed party in the city and attracts around 30,000 attendees. The event offers live music, a farmer’s market, and more than 200 booths. There will also be a protest.
2. Denver, CO
Colorado is one of the first states in the United States to legalize cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes, so you can expect it to go all-out when it comes to 420 celebrations. The Denver 420 Festival is considered to be an epic way to spend the holiday and celebrate cannabis. You can join the rally in the Civic Center in downtown Denver, which rally is considered to be one of the largest in the world. You can also experience the three-day High Times Cannabis Cup, which also has live concerts and awards to boot!
3. Seattle, Washington
Washington state is also one of the first cannabis-legal states in the U.S. You can check out HEMPFEST, which is on its 27th annual run this year. It is a huge festival and is known to be the world’s largest annual cannabis policy reform and free speech event. It also prides itself for being the most socially responsible and most sophisticated cannabis rally in history.
Aside from the all the featured talks and speeches, the event also features music, as well as arts and crafts, informational, and food vendors.
4. San Francisco, CA
Do not expect anything less from the city that started the hippie subculture: San Francisco! Hippie Hill hosts an annual 420 event that dates back to the 70s. Every year, tens of thousands of attendees head over to Hippie Hill to celebrate. This year will be a lot more special, though, because it would mark the first year of recreational cannabis being officially legal in California.
5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Many people from around the world fly to Amsterdam at any time just to avail of cannabis. So you can just imagine what the city has in store for 420! True, it is now putting tight restrictions in place with regard to cannabis access, but the Amsterdam 420 Festival is still an event worth experiencing. The festival, which is held outside the City Hall downtown, features one full day of cannabis-related activities.
6. London, UK
Cannabis might still be illegal in the United Kingdom, but that does not mean the English do not get to celebrate 420 with the rest of the world. The annual London 420 Rally is proof of this. Every year, cannabis supporters head to Hyde Park to protest the criminalization of weed in the country. Other than the protest, there are awesome performances and live music and, who knows, you might spot some celebrities, too.
7. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen has a green light district or hippie district called Christiania, where the law allows the sale and purchase of cannabis. So if you want to celebrate 420 in a different way, minus all the fanfare, you may want to experience Christiania with a bunch of friends.
